In February, The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India released new legal rules for major social media sites. Centre had provided a three-month window period to these social media firms to comply with the rules. These rules come into effect starting May 26th.
The guidelines encompass everything from appointing authorities such as a resident grievance officer, a chief enforcement officer, and a nodal contact person to handling complaints, tracking problematic information, producing a compliance report, and eliminating problematic information for social media platforms with over 50 Lakh users in India.
Twitter and Facebook are yet to comply with these rules hence putting their operations in India in jeopardy.
Indian Company Koo has already appointed a resident grievance officer, a chief compliance officer and a nodal contact person.
